Rainbow Wahine drop ball at Louisiana Tech

The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team committed 30 turnovers yesterday in a 68-56 loss to Louisiana Tech at Ruston, La.

Shanavia Dowell had 19 points and 11 rebounds, and Adrienne Johnson added 18 points for Louisiana Tech, which committed only seven turnovers.

Hawai'i's Megan Tinnin recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Keisha Kanekoa added 16 points, and Tara Hittle had six points and 11 rebounds.

Hawai'i fell to 5-18 overall and 2-8 in the Western Athletic Conference. Louisiana Tech improved to 13-11 and 6-4.

The Lady Techsters took a 27-12 lead after Sidney Stewart hit a jumper with 4:31 left in the first half.

Hawai'i cut the deficit to 31-21 at the break.

Louisiana Tech put the game away with a 9-0 run to take a 52-32 advantage with 8:14 left.

Hawai'i shot 36 percent and Louisiana Tech finished at 37 percent.

The Rainbow Wahine will conclude their road trip tomorrow against New Mexico State.

RANKED WOMEN

NO. 4 DUKE 77, CLEMSON 53

Chante Black and Krystal Thomas scored 16 points apiece and the Blue Devils (20-3, 8-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) beat the Tigers (13-13, 2-9) at Durham, N.C., to secure their 12th consecutive 20-win season.

Carrem Gay added 10 points for the Blue Devils, who remained a game behind Florida State in a tight conference race. Sthefany Thomas scored 18 points for the Tigers, who have lost six consecutive ACC games.

NO. 14 FLORIDA STATE 77, NO. 8 NORTH CAROLINA 70

Freshman Cierra Bravard had 16 points and 10 rebounds, leading the host Seminoles (21-5, 9-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) over the Tar Heels (20-4, 6-3) at Tallahassee, Fla., for coach Sue Semrau's 200th victory.

Florida State built a 15-point lead in the first half and led by as many as 17 late in the game, defeating the Tar Heels for the first time in four years.

RANKED MEN

WEST VIRGINIA 93, NO. 13 VILLANOVA 72

Da'Sean Butler scored 20 of his career-high 43 points in the first half to help the Mountaineers (17-8, 6-6 Big East) open up a 20-point lead in rolling past the Wildcats (20-5, 8-4) at Morgantown, W.Va.

Devin Ebanks added 16 for West Virginia, which led 52-34 at halftime. Corey Fisher had 17 points to lead Villanova, which closed to 75-62 with 5:59 left, but got no closer.

NO. 15 BUTLER 80, ILLINOIS-CHICAGO 61

Matt Howard scored 19 points, Gordon Hayward had 18 and the visiting Bulldogs (22-2, 13-1 Horizon League) hit 13 3-pointers to beat the Flames (11-14, 4-11) at Indianapolis.

Hayward and Howard combined for seven points in an 18-3 run which gave the Bulldogs a 25-8 lead. The Flames got no closer than seven thereafter.
