The state Department of Land and Natural Resources began work today to replace the portable water system at Sand Island State Recreation Area, the state said in a news release.
Work will start near the end of the park at Comfort Station No. 6 by the park's baseball fields and will proceed through the park and conclude at the park's entrance.
The park will remain open during construction. There will be some inconvenience to park users in future as trenching will occur in the park's roadway, and in parking areas of the comfort stations where some parking stalls may be closed.
As waterline improvements begin in the camping areas near Comfort Station Nos. 2 and 3, certain campsites will be closed to ensure public safety. The construction should not interfere with other campsites in the area.
The park's entrance at Sand Island Parkway may require temporary closure during September or October, to connect the new water system with the main service line. The closure will be planned during the non-peak period and take a few hours.
