GOP makes 'robocalls,' criticizing Abercrombie for stimulus vote

Associated Press

The National Republican Congressional Committee is making computerized telephone calls to residents of Rep. Neil Abercrombie's district, criticizing him for supporting President Obama's economic stimulus bill.

The recorded "robocalls" mention Abercrombie's vote for "nearly a trillion dollars in wasteful spending" but do not say that the reference is to the stimulus legislation.

Paul Lindsay, a spokesman for the committee, says the calls were being made because Honolulu Councilman Charles Djou's 2010 campaign for Abercrombie's seat has shown "early signs of success."

Abercrombie says he is proud of his support for the stimulus bill and is challenging Djou to tell Hawaii residents and businesses to give back the federal money if he opposes the measure.
