Advertiser Staff

Preseason All-America left-hander Daniel Bibona pitched one-hit ball into the eighth inning to lift No. 9 UC Irvine over Hawai'i, 5-1, tonight in the collegiate baseball season opener for both teams at Les Murakami Stadium.

The Anteaters (1-0) snapped UH's four-game win streak in season openers. The Rainbows (0-1) lost 2004's opener 7-4 to Texas, which also came here nationally ranked.

Bibona (1-0) allowed a run, an eight-inning single to Jeffrey Van Doonum that broke up the no-hitter, but erased him on a double play, and walked one in 7 2/3 innings.

Senior Jayson Kramer (0-1), making his first career start, went 6 2/3 innings, allowing four runs, seven hits and two walks, while tying a career-high with seven strikeouts.
