Feb. 28 festivities mark public library's 40th year

Makawao Public Library will celebrate its 40th anniversary with music, presentations and refreshments on Feb. 28.

The 5,632-square-foot library, at 1159 Makawao Ave., opened Feb. 22, 1969, and serves the communities of Hali'imaile, Pukalani, Makawao, Ha'iku and Kula.

The celebration, sponsored by the Friends of the Library of Hawai'i, Maui Friends of the Library and Upcountry Bookbuilders, will begin at 10 a.m. with a blessing by deacon Albert Phillips of St. Joseph Church, followed by a presentation on the library's history by library manager Carla Mauri. Gail Ainsworth, author of "Maui Remembers," will talk about the town's history at 11 a.m., and refreshments and music by Scottish piper Hamish Burgess will be served up at noon.

Maui entertainer Rose Roselinsky-Crowe will perform at 1 p.m. and John Crowe will discuss "Scottish Heraldry on Maui" at 1:15 p.m.

A book sale will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and children's activities will be offered from noon to 3 p.m.
