EDUCATIONAL EXHIBIT
'ALPHABET SOUP' EXPLORES WRITTEN HAWAIIAN
Need a primer on written Hawaiian? Head over to the Mission Houses Museum for "Alphabet Soup: Literacy, Language and Learning" before June 13.
The exhibit, presented in three "chapters," explores the written Hawaiian language through histories of the language written by Congregationalist missionaries; a variety of Hawai'i-related literature; and an alphabetical display of some of the museums' cultural objects from an aniani kilohi (mirror) and helu ho'ike (abacus) to kepela (zebra). Several special events are planned through the duration of the exhibit, including Keiki Talk Story sessions, Historical Bites lectures, a family day and a showing of the 1966 movie "Hawai'i," based on a James Michener novel, and followed by a discussion on both. The Mission Houses Museum, located at 533 S. King St., is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Admission is $6. For more information, call 447-3910 or visit www.missionhouses.org.
