BYUH men, women post PacWest hoop wins

Trenson Akana scored 15 points as Brigham Young-Hawai'i, ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division II, won its 18th straight last night, topping Grand Canyon, 86-71, in a men's Pacific West Conference basketball game in Phoenix.

The Seasiders improved to 21-1 overall and 11-0 in PacWest play, while the Antelopes dipped to 13-12 and 5-6.

In a women's PacWest game, also in Phoenix, Latoya Wily scored 26 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead BYUH to a 75-68 victory over Grand Canyon.

The Seasiders moved above .500 (12-11, 6-5 PacWest). The Antelopes, who have already clinched at least a share of the conference title, fell to 16-9, 9-2, with their second straight loss.

BODYBOARDING



5 FROM ISLES STILL ALIVE

Five Hawai'i competitors are still in contention for the final day of the Turbo Pipeline Pro men's bodyboarding contest.

The fifth, sixth and seventh rounds were completed yesterday in 6- to 10-foot waves at the Banzai Pipeline.

David Hubbard, David Phillips and Kainoa McGee all advanced through yesterday's heats.

The two top Hawai'i competitors — Jeff Hubbard and Mike Stewart — are seeded into the eighth round.

The five Hawai'i competitors are among 32 still in contention. Brazil's Uri Valadao, the 2008 world champion, is also seeded into the eighth round.

Among those eliminated yesterday were former world champions Andre Both of South Africa and Damian King of Australia, and Hawai'i competitors Spencer Skipper, Jacob Romero and Oshi Grady.

HPU SWEEPS CU

Hawai'i Pacific swept Chaminade, 2-0 and 13-0, on Sunday in a PacWest Conference softball doubleheader at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

HPU is 11-1 and 2-0, while Chaminade is 0-10 and 0-2.
