DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — An Israeli doubles player taking part in a controversial Dubai tournament a week after a fellow Israeli was barred from entering the country has lost his opening match.
Andy Ram and his partner, Kevin Ullyett of Zimbabwe, lost to Russia's Marat Safin and Spain's David Ferrer 6-3, 2-6, 10-8.
Ram's appearance comes a week after another Israeli player, Shahar Peer, was barred from entering the country to play in the women's tournament.
At the time, organizers cited security concerns for the decision, which prompted widespread protests and pressure to allow Ram to compete.
Spectators watching Ram's match had to leave their belongings outside, and metal detectors were set outside the court.
