WAIMEA VALLEY
Program lets you hike, learn Hawaiian words

Waimea Valley is featuring a new hike and language program at the North Shore park.

The family hike from the waterfall to Kalahe'e Ridge and North Valley is from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, with registration at 8:30 a.m.

The hike is $5 plus the cost of entrance into the valley. Space is limited to 20 and participants must be at least 7 years old. The hike is moderate to easy.

The language program is at 10:30 a.m. daily, and visitors are introduced to a Hawaiian word for the day, its phonetic sound and standard meaning. The word's hidden meaning or kaona also will be demonstrated throughout the valley in a story, song or sentence.
