Four times was not enough.
Third-ranked Kaimuki and fourth-ranked Kahuku will meet for the fifth time this season tomorrow — this time for the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red Division championship.
The Red Raiders forced the winner-take-all game after handing the Bulldogs their first loss in the OIA's modified double-elimination postseason tournament, 45-41, last night at McKinley.
A crowd of about 800 saw Kahuku improve to 16-1 and avenge a loss to Kaimuki last Saturday. Kaimuki fell to 12-4.
"Kaimuki's got a great program and every time they come in, we know they're going to be tough," Kahuku coach Hiram Akina said. "We've got to play our best to stay in the game with them. They proved that they belong here, but our guys came back and fought back. I was really proud of our guys."
The Bulldogs took a 10-6 lead after the opening quarter, but the Red Raiders turned up their defense in the second quarter. Kahuku held Kaimuki to just three points in the period.
Trailing by three points, Kahuku got back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers from Aulola Tonga, Irwin Ah-Hoy and Nehoa Akina to pull ahead 15-12 midway through the second quarter.
Kahuku led 19-13 at the half.
Kaimuki scored on five of its first six possessions to open the third quarter and closed to 26-25.
Kahuku's Kona Schwenke hit a pair of free throws to give his team a three-point lead, but Gabriel Stietzel drained a 3-pointer to tie it at 28 with 3:30 left in the third quarter and the Bulldogs carried a 34-30 lead into the fourth quarter.
Kaimuki took its largest lead with 4:30 to play on David Taulung's 3-pointer that made it 39-32. However, Kahuku went to its bigs in the post and Kaimuki had difficulty keeping up, as the Red Raiders went on a 10-0 run to vault ahead, 42-39.
"We didn't hit shots down the stretch; that's what it boils down to," Kaimuki coach Kelly Grant said. "We had a lot of open shots, but we just couldn't hit any."
Schwenke led Kahuku with 10 points. Jray Galeai had nine points and Ah-Hoy added eight.
Kaimuki's Stietzel led all scorers with 16 points and Taulung added 10.
Tomorrow's Red title game follows the White championship between Castle and Kailua, which begins at 5 p.m. at Radford.
