Road damaged by flood reopens after 3 weeks
The city yesterday reopened a portion of Waipahu Street near Waipahu Depot Road that has been closed to traffic since the Dec. 11 storm, the city Department of Facility Maintenance said.
The road was closed after a stream overflowed, washing away road shoulders and causing other damage. City officials were also worried about the integrity of an old rock wall below the former O'ahu Sugar Mill site, now the home of the Leeward YMCA.
Crews have been fixing some of the storm-related damage and the area is now safe for traffic, said Keoki Miyamoto, the city's deputy director of facility maintenance.
During the road closure, motorists have had to detour onto Farrington Highway.
