Family fare

By Roger Moore
McClatchy-Tribune News Service

'MARLEY & ME'

  • Rating: PG for thematic material, some suggestive content and language.

  • What it's about: A married couple adopt a dog whose bad behavior grows on them as they raise their family.

  • The kid attractor factor: A dog. And Owen Wilson.

  • Good lessons/bad lessons: Don't bother to train your dog and you just might get a best-seller out of it.

  • Violence: None.

  • Language: A smattering of profanity, nothing too extreme.

  • Sex: Discussed, and not just of the leg-humping variety.

  • Drugs: Doggie sedatives.

  • Parents' advisory: More adult and less cute, cuddly and small-child friendly than you'd expect from a movie with a dog in the title.

    'BEDTIME STORIES'

  • Rating: PG for some mild rude humor and mild language.

  • What it's about: A goofy uncle tells stories to his nephew and niece, and they edit those stories into events that come true.

  • The kid attractor factor: Slapstick, a bug-eyed hamster, flatulence jokes — sounds like an Adam Sandler film.

  • Good lessons/bad lessons: "Your fun is only limited by your imagination."

  • Language: Lots and lots of profanity.

  • Sex: None, though a va-va-voom Paris Hilton clone plays a role.

  • Drugs: None.

  • Parents' advisory: Kid-friendly, but chatty and slow; this doesn't offer much to anybody over the age of 10.
