The Harold K.L. Castle Foundation has given $90,000 toward construction of a new playground for 'Aikahi Elementary School in Kailua.

The school lost its beloved and unique playground last year as wear and tear caused deterioration of the facility built by the community out of old tires and lumber.

Since then, the Friends of 'Aikahi Playground has hired a consultant who enlisted ideas from students, developing unique features for the new playground including a shark slide, volcano with hanging tire, a climbing wall and a moving boat.

The Castle grant will be for construction — $75,000 — and maintenance — $15,000 — of the new playground, according to an e-mail press release.

The Friends are trying to raise $150,000 for the project. The playground is scheduled to be built Feb. 11-16 by volunteers.

"This generous grant from the Castle foundation is the centerpiece of our community fundraising efforts," said Dave Eachus, co-general coordinator for the project. "We are thankful that the Harold K.L. Castle Foundation has recognized the importance of this project to our community and especially its importance to all Windward children, both now and in the future."

Terry George, executive director of the foundation, said it is proud to be part of the project that is already making an impact on the adults involved.

"The huge groundswell of support for this playground is what caught our attention," George said.
