Preps: School report on dead player: Coach followed rules

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A Kentucky school system report on the death of a football player concludes that a Louisville coach and his staff did not violate any rules governing the handling of players and practices on hot days.
The Jefferson County Public Schools report released Wednesday concerns the August 2008 death of 15-year-old Pleasure Ridge Park sophomore Max Gilpin. Coach David Jason Stinson has been charged with reckless homicide in the case and has pleaded not guilty.
The report, which is separate from the criminal case, concluded that Stinson and his assistants may not have used "appropriate means" to motivate the players but did not break state high school athletic rules.
Gilpin collapsed while running sprints at the end of a preseason practice. He died three days later. The causes were listed as septic shock, multiple organ failure and heat stroke.
