The city will hold a public hearing at 10 a.m. Aug. 5 at McCoy Pavilion to allow the public to comment on the city's special management area use permit application needed for a portion of the under grounding of the 72-inch sewer pipes

The line, which runs from Ala Wai Elementary School to Ala Moana Beach Park, is the final phase of a project to upgrade the sewer system that serves Waikiki and several surrounding communities. The project began when a 42-inch sewer line on Kaiçolu Street ruptured in 2006. The break forced the city to dump 50 million gallons of raw sewage into the Ala Wai Canal and closed Waikiki beaches for days.
The public hearing is to discuss the permit needed for the portion of the project that runs along Ala Moana Beach Park.
The project is one of the biggest the city will be undertaking. But the work won't entail much in the way of lane closures because the city will use "micro-tunneling" technology _ feeding new pipes in place 40 feet bleow the surface through pits.
