Firefighters now are mopping up a brush fire that charred 8 acres in a gulch at the back of Waianae Valley, fire officials said.
The fire was reported at 3:30 p.m. and was contained by 4:10 p.m., said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Terry Seelig. The fire got within about 100 yards of the nearest home. No structures were burned and no one was injured, he said.
Firefighters will be on scene for another couple of hours, Seelig said, putting out hotspots in the burned area. Five engines and three tankers responded to the fire.
The cause of the fire has not been determined.
