A 64-year-old man who died of an apparent drowning Wednesday has been identified as Hamilton Manley, an assistant coach for the University of Hawai'i-Hilo men's basketball team.

Manley was snorkeling with family members in waters off the Kapoho Vacationland subdivision in Puna when he was found unresponsive shortly after 9:30 a.m., police said. Bystanders brought Manley to shore and began CPR before he was transported to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 11 a.m.

Luoluo Hong, UHH acting athletic director and vice chancellor of student affairs, said Manley touched the lives of many college athletes and youth basketball players.

"When we lose a coach and an educator like this, it is truly a grievous loss, but the ripple effects of Coach Ham's influence will continue," Luoluo said.

Manley was named assistant coach at UHH in September 2003. He also served as an instructor at various camps and clinics.

BARCA, BACALSO ADVANCE

Kaua'i's Dustin Barca upset South Africa's Jordy Smith in the third round of the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro men's surfing contest yesterday.

The third round was completed in 2- to 4-foot waves at Imbituba, Brazil.

Smith, who entered the contest ranked No. 6 in the world, led for most of the 30-minute heat. Barca, who is ranked No. 30, won it with his final wave, which received a score of 6.9.

Barca's final score of 13.07 topped Smith's total of 10.33.

Kekoa Bacalso of Mililani also advanced to the fourth round. He defeated Australia's Dean Morrison, 13.4 to 10.74.

Barca is scheduled to face No. 7 Bobby Martinez of California in the fourth round; Bacalso is scheduled to meet No. 1 Joel Parkinson of Australia.

Roy Powers of Kaua'i was eliminated in the third round by Australia's Mick Fanning.

22 SEEKING TWO SPOTS

A field of 22 golfers, including three from the Philippines and one from Santa Barbara, will play for two spots in the U.S. Women's Amateur Hawai'i qualifier tomorrow at Waikoloa Beach Resort's Kings' Course.

Play begins at 7 a.m., with 2007 state high school champion Anna Jang, a Punahou graduate who will play for Princeton in the fall, in the first group. Two-time state high school champ Kristina Merkle, headed for Tulsa on a golf scholarship, is in the final group an hour later.

Punahou junior Cyd Okino and Allisen Corpuz, a Punahou sixth-grader, are in the second group.

Also playing are 2008 Jennie K. champion Xyra Suyetsugu, Kamehameha and Stanford graduate Mari Chun, 2008 state stroke play champion Katie Sisler and Miki Ueoka from Kaua'i.

The 2009 U.S. Women's Amateur is Aug. 3 to 9 at Old Warson Country Club in St. Louis.
