Kapa'a's Tom gets USTA honor

Advertiser Staff

Lyndsey Tom, a recent graduate of Kapa'a High School, is one of 52 student-athletes nationwide to win a $6,000 college scholarship from USTA Serves — Foundation for Academics, Character, Excellence.

USTA Serves is the philanthropic and charitable entity of the U.S. Tennis Association. The foundation has granted 71 high school students a variety of scholarships, worth $379,000.

Honorees were selected on the basis of their commitment to academic success, their local community and the game of tennis. An objective of USTA Serves is to encourage America's youth to pursue their goals and highest dreams by succeeding in school and becoming responsible citizens.

A volunteer summer tennis instructor who also pitches in to clean up beaches, Tom was the sportsmanship award winner at the USTA G16s Zonals in 2007. She was president of the National Honor Society, captain of her high school team and a member of the Japanese Club. Winner of Kapa'a's Scholar-Athlete Award, she is planning to major in chemistry in college.
