American Samoa gets new fiber optic link to Hawaii

Associated Press

PAGO PAGO, American Samoa — With hymns and dancing, American Samoa is celebrating a new fiber optic cable link to Hawaii.

Gov. Togiola Tulafono said Tuesday the cable will spur the development of high-technology industries in American Samoa at a time when tuna canneries are closing or shrinking.
The cable was previously used to link New Zealand and Hawaii. It was moved after New Zealand and Hawaii were connected by another cable with more capacity.
About 500 people attend a ceremony for the cable launch at Governor Rex Lee Auditorium.
The two-hour program was carried live on state-run television.
American Samoa is a part owner of the new cable venture. The other partner is Florida-based eLandia International, who owns local wireless telecommunication firm Blue Sky Communication.
