Korean festival gets head-start today
By Jeff Chung
It's time for the 8th Annual Korean Festival at Kapi'olani Park.
The traditional festival takes place tomorrow, but it has a special kickoff tonight at Sunset on the Beach with "Lump of Sugar," a Korean film from CJ Entertainment about a girl and a race horse who both lost their mothers when they were young. The pre-movie entertainment at Queen's Surf Beach includes singer Park Sun-ju, Hawaiian groups and traditional Korean dance.
Tomorrow's event at Kapi'olani Park is themed "See, Taste, and Listen." Food booths, entertainment and sponsor tents will fill the field with giveaways and cultural information.
The Korean Festival is staged by the Hawaii Korean Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with a multitude of local sponsors and hundreds of volunteers. The festival was originally started to celebrate the Korean centennial of immigration to the United States, and Hawai'i served as the first home for many Korean immigrants.
The big draw this year is entertainment: in addition to the performances tonight at Sunset on the Beach, Hwan Hee and Kwon Min will perform at the festival tomorrow.
Hwan Hee performed at Hawai'i Theatre in February with Brian Joo as the duo Fly to the Sky. Park was in the Islands earlier this year with Song Il-gook for his fan appreciation event.
Hwan Hee shocked the entertainment world when he openly talked about his facial makeover through plastic surgery. He is well-known for his singing talent and for being half of the rhythm and blues duo Fly to the Sky. He also has many albums, awards and songs to his credit, including the theme song for the Korean drama "Fashion 70s."
The singer-actor-model made his television debut with "Over the Rainbow," a 2006 MBC drama series. Hwan Hee and Joo have since decided to pursue their own careers.
Kwon Min's acting debut came in 2002's sitcom "Orange" and he recently had roles in "General Hospital 2" and other Korean TV shows.
He also made an appearance in the Korean film "My Boyfriend is Type B." Kwon Min was also at the Song Il-gook fan event in March.
Park Sun-ju is a singer and songwriter who has recorded five albums and is currently a vocal professor and trainer in South Korea. She specializes in combining jazz, ballads and blues into her own style of singing.
Park studied at New York University, where she majored in psychology and music performance.
