Car accident kills driver in Wahiawa
A Wahiawa man died yesterday morning when the car he was driving hit a utility pole in Wahiawa.
The medical examiner's office identified him as Richard Corber, 60.
Police said Corber was driving west on California Avenue about 9:45 a.m. when the 1969 Volkswagen Bug he was driving veered off the road, clipped a parked truck and hit a utility pole near Makaweo Avenue.
Corber was pronounced dead at the scene. No one in the truck was hurt.
California Avenue was shut down between Nanea Avenue and 'U'uku Street as police investigated. California Avenue was reopened about 1 p.m.
It was the 33rd traffic fatality on O'ahu this year, compared with 25 at this time in 2008.
OVERDUE HIKERS ON BIG ISLE FOUND SAFE
Two overdue hikers from New Jersey were found safe Thursday after they became separated on the Mauna Loa trail, the Hawai'i County Fire Department reported.
A 26-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman, both from Carteret, N.J., were hiking up Mauna Loa when they became separated, the fire department said. The woman called 911 at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
The fire department helicopter spotted her but could not pick her up because of the coming darkness.
The helicopter crew radioed her GPS coordinates to a ground crew. Meanwhile, the male hiker walked out to the Mauna Loa Observatory parking lot.
Both hikers did not need medical attention.
