The remaining surfers from the Hawai'i contingent were eliminated from the Roxy ASP Women's World Longboard Championships yesterday.

The second day of the three-day contest was run in 1- to 3-foot waves at Biarritz, France. The second round and quarterfinals were completed yesterday.

Kelia Moniz and Geodee Clark were eliminated in the quarterfinals; Miku Uemura was eliminated in the second round.

Moniz had the lead over France's Justine Dupont for most of the quarterfinal heat, but Dupont won it with a score of 8.0 (out of 10) with two minutes remaining.

Clark also had a close quarterfinal heat, losing to Coline Menard of Reunion Island, 9.25-8.55.

The semifinals and final of the contest are expected to run today. The winner of the final will be considered the 2009 women's world champion of longboard surfing.

BACALSO, POWERS ADVANCE IN S. AFRICA

Two Hawai'i surfers advanced, but three were eliminated on the opening day of the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay men's contest yesterday.

The first round was completed in 3- to 5-foot waves at Jeffreys Bay, South Africa.

Kekoa Bacalso of Mililani and Roy Powers of Kaua'i won their respective first round heats. Bacalso had one of the best heats of the day, receiving scores of 8.33 and 7.5 for his two top waves.

Fellow Hawai'i surfers Dustin Barca, Fred Patacchia Jr. and Torrey Meister were eliminated.

The contest is the fifth of 10 stops on the 2009 ASP World Tour.

TRACK AND FIELD

FOUR FROM UH ON ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM

Four University of Hawai'i track and field athletes were honored as the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced its All-Academic team yesterday.

Multi-event athlete Annett Wichmann and high jumper Emily Sheppard are UH's first two four-time recipients. Pole vaulter Jessica Custance was named to the all-academic team for the third year while high jumper Amber Kaufman earned her first recognition.

To qualify, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either the NCAA Division I Indoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard or the NCAA Division I Outdoor regional or national qualifying standard in their respective event.

GOLF

MAEKAWA SHOOTS 72 IN U.S. PUBLINX

Sean Maekawa of Pa'auilo, Hawai'i, shot a 1-over-par 72 and was six shots back of leader Nick Taylor on the first day of qualifying at the U.S. Amateur Public Links.

The 21-year-old Taylor — the low amateur at last month's U.S. Open — shot 66 yesterday to take a one-shot lead over Nick Geyer, who played at the University of New Mexico.

Stephen Zane, of Kula, Hawai'i, shot 79 at the Jimmie Austin Golf Course on the University of Oklahoma campus.

The second round of qualifying is today then the top 64 advance to match play. The winner earns a spot in the Masters.
