Big Island police officer hit by car while directing traffic

HILO — A Hawaii County police officer was hit by a car Monday night while directing traffic on Waikoloa Road at the scene of a vehicle collision.
The officer was nearly struck by a car that failed to slow down as it entered the collision scene.
As the officer turned to get the car’s license plate number, a second car entered the scene and ran over the officer’s right foot.
The car was driven by a 44-year-old California woman.
The policeman, a 50-year-old South Kohala patrol officer, was taken by fire rescue personnel to North Hawaii Community Hospital, where he was treated and released.
South Kohala police have initiated a negligent injury case.
