Vintage Hawaii-themed posters for sale at Manhattan auction
On Aug. 5, Swann Auction Galleries brings the beach, sun, and sand of Hawaii to the streets of Manhattan at its Vintage Posters Sale. Beautiful ladies dance among the backdrop of the Island with flowers and lei in their hair.
Also included in the sale is the top lot, L’Estampe Modern (estimate: $15,000 to $20,000), which contains 100 images that come in a portfolio sleeve designed by Czech painter and decorative artist Alfons Mucha. A woman with a carousel and child holding a sand bucket, and another woman picking flowers in the outdoors, are just a few of the posters that conjure up memories of summertime.
In addition to the summer posters, for sale at auction are 49 Mather & Company prints, including a classic poster of the old Woolworth building (estimate: $1,200 to $1,800).
Touché in these times, a poster that depicts a pack of rats running off with dollar signs, emblazoned with the words, “Rats carry off the dollars” (estimate: $1,000 to $1,500), is also for sale. Also included are eight never-before-seen posters including a motivational one with a 1925-style car on it, prompting people to “Set the Pace! Win the Race!” (estimate: $2,000 to $3,000).
Two vintage Disney movie posters round out the sale. One of puppet favorite Pinocchio from 1940, complete with his sidekick Jiminy Cricket (estimate: $6,000 to $9,000). A Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs poster from 1937 stirs up classic Disney nostalgia, with each of the seven dwarves’ charming faces perfectly encompassing the names that they are famous for (estimate: $6,000 to $9,000).
