The family of a former Roosevelt High School basketball all-star mourned her death in an early-morning crash yesterday, while police continued to look for the driver of a truck who fled the accident scene near Kalihi.

A steady stream of friends came to the Papakolea home of 21-year-old Tatiana Beasley, whom a relative identified as the victim in the 1:45 a.m. crash.

She was one of three young people on O'ahu who died in vehicle-related incidents over the weekend. On Saturday, a 4-year-old boy died after being found in the trunk of a car in 'Ewa Beach, and a 15-year-old Waimanalo boy was struck and killed while riding a moped.

On and off the court, Tatiana Beasley was known as Tati. Outside her home yesterday, family members posted a sign of yellow and red letters on a telephone pole. A butcher paper poster gave friends and family a place to record their feelings of what the all-star player meant to them.

"I want people to remember Tati as a loving, caring person who always put family first," said her brother, Alapaki Heanu. "She loved basketball. It was her life. She always had a basketball in her hands."

Police said it appears Beasley was riding in the bed of a 1993 Nissan pickup truck that was traveling west on Moanalua Freeway near the Ola Lane overpass when it went out of control and hit a concrete barrier on the right side of the roadway.

Police said Beasley was found on the road. She died at the scene. Speeding was an apparent factor, police said.

The truck was left at the scene but the driver fled, police said. Anyone with information may call CrimeStoppers at 955-8300.

Last night, as tears flowed, Tati's family still did not know details of the accident. Heanu said they didn't know who she was with or where she had been going.

Beasley, a 5-foot-6 forward, was an Advertiser first-team all-state player in 2006, her senior year. She attended Hutchinson University in Kansas on a basketball scholarship. She returned home recently and was living at home in Pakakolea and working at an auto body shop. Just last week she spoke to her brother and aunt about returning to college and finishing up her degree, said her great aunt, Vanessa Helsham.

"She played the game and supported her cousin, my daughter, who played at another school," Helsham said.

Meanwhile, there was no statement by police on how a 4-year-old boy got into the trunk of his uncle's car in Iroquois Point on Saturday. The boy died after his uncle found him in the trunk.

Authorities yesterday did not disclose the boy's name or the cause of death.

A police report said the boy was playing outside his home on Ibis Avenue in Iroquois Point on Saturday while his mother was cleaning house. When his mother went to check on him, she couldn't find him and called family members to help her search.

As the boy's uncle was driving his brown Honda Civic to look for the boy, he noticed a warning light on his dashboard. He went to check the tail lights, opened the trunk and found his nephew.

Emergency personnel performed CPR on the boy before taking him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Charges remained pending yesterday against Dwayne K. Canon, 47, who was arrested following a fatal crash in Waimanalo at 1:55 a.m. Saturday.

Police said Canon was the driver of a vehicle that struck and killed Kailua High School student Junior Ilae, 15, of Waimanalo.

Police said Ilae was riding a moped on Kalaniana'ole Highway when he was hit by a vehicle turning right into Waimanalo Town Center.

Canon was arrested on suspicion of negligent homicide, operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant and driving with a suspended license.
