''The Bachelorette' picks love on Big Island

In a summer stuffed with reality shows, networks are starting to reload.
Tonight, “The Bachelorette” has the final decision of Jillian Harris ... who grants she doesn't fit the the leggy-blonde norm of dating shows. “I'm just a short, hyper, quirky, Canadian.”
The next night, she and her chosen guy are interviewed. A key summer shows ends.
Not to worry. By then, several will have just started, led by ABC's “Dating in the Dark,” Fox's “Hell's Kitchen” and HGTV's “Design Star.” And there's much more on the way, including Fox's “More to Love” and “Moment of Truth” and – after a 10-month black-out – Lifetime's “Project Runway.”
First, Harris gets the spotlight. She insists her self-assessment is no exaggeration; she's definitely:
– Short. “I'm 5-2, maybe 5-3 on a good day.”
– Quirky. “I love to make people laugh; I love to stand up for myself.”
– Canadian, to the extreme.
This isn't someone who grew up in a city, hugging the U.S. border. Harris — now 29 and a restaurant designer in Vancouver — is from Peace River, a town of 6,200, at the northern edge of Alberta.
The weather can be harsh there. (In mid-May, while she was basking on a balcony in Hawaii, she was told it had just snowed in her home town.) Still, she said, there was much more.
“I loved growing up there,” Harris said. “I was always beautiful outdoors … We could run in the woods until 7 or 8 at night.”
That helped mold a zesty personality. Harris finished third in “The Bachelor,” then got her own show.
By now, the “Bachelor” is notorious for its failures — 13 seasons, no marriages, many early crashes. The “Bachelorette” has done a bit better — four seasons, one marriage.
Harris shrugs that off. “The dating scene back home doesn't have the best track record either.”
Now she makes her choice, then steps aside. Here's a sampling of the reality scene:
ENDING NOW
• “The Bachelorette,” ABC. On July 20, it paused for “The Men Tell All.” Now comes the final choice (7-9:02 p.m. tonight and “After the Final Rose” (9 p.m. tomorrow).
JUST STARTED
• Design Star,” 10 p.m. Sundays, HGTV, started July 19. Eleven strong-minded designers – ranging from three in their 20s to three in their 40s – face challenges; the winner gets an HGTV show.
• “Dating in the Dark,” 9:02 p.m. Mondays, ABC, started July 20. Three men and three women live in separate wings of a house; they date in total darkness, but viewers can see via infrared cameras.
– “Hell's Kitchen,” 7 p.m. Tuesdays, Fox, starting July 21. Gordon Ramsay shouts at chefs.
STILL COMING
– “More to Love,” 8 p.m. Tuesdays, Fox, starting tomorrow. It's a dating show for people who are overweight.
– “Moment of Truth,” 8 p.m. Wednesdays, Fox, Aug. 5. Last summer's ratings success returns, with people facing tough questions and a lie detector.
– “Project Runway,” 10 p.m. Thursdays, Lifetime, Aug. 20. After immense success, this show disappeared after it started to switch networks. Now, after a court settlement, it's back.
– Many shows from Bravo, which lost “Project Runway.” It has just started “Miami Social” (10 p.m. Tuesdays, from July 14); coming are the new seasons of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” (7 p.m. Thursdays, July 30) and “Flipping Out” (7 p.m. Mondays, Aug. 17).
– And nothing but reality on the Fox Reality Channel. The next new show is “Househusbands of Hollywood” (Saturdays, Aug. 15, check listings).
ONGOING
– Many shows don't peak until the end of summer. They're led by NBC's “America's Got Talent” (8 p.m. Tuesdays and 7 and 8 p.m. Wednesdays), Fox's “So You Think You Can Dance” (7 p.m. Wednesdays and 8 p.m. Thursdays) and CBS' “Big Brother” (7 p.m. Thursdays and Sundays, 8 p.m. Tuesdays).
