Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i's Duane DeSoto placed second in the Oxbow WLT at Tahara longboard surfing contest yesterday.

The two-day event was completed in 2- to 3-foot waves at Tahara, Japan.

DeSoto won three heats earlier in the day, then lost to Australia's Harley Ingleby in the one-on-one final. Ingleby's two best waves received a total score of 14.75, which topped DeSoto's 11.75.

"I lost track of my game plan out there," DeSoto said. "I'm stoked to have made the final and of course, I wish I won, but it's a good result."

Ingleby received $10,000 and is now ranked No. 1 on the ASP World Longboard Tour. DeSoto, who is now No. 2, received $5,000.

DeSoto upset fellow Hawai'i surfer Bonga Perkins in the semifinals, 15.6-12.75. Perkins, the 2008 world champion, was the No. 1 seed for the contest.
