115 swine-flu cases now confirmed in Hawaii
The number of confirmed cases of H1N1 influenza, also known as swine flu, rose by 33 cases, the state Department of Health said this morning.
That number brings the total Hawaii cases to 115 since the first three were confirmed on May 5.
All new cases are Oahu residents and all have recovered or are recovering at home with no complications.
No additional information will be made available.
The Health Department was reporting confirmed cases daily but this week began issuing reports only on Wednesdays on its Web site.
A department spokeswoman said the change to weekly reports was made “to ease the burden on the staff,” and to stress prevention measures rather than the outbreak numbers.
Meanwhile, the health department issued a medical advisory to physicians statewide yesterday revising earlier recommendations for testing. The health department will now focus its priority on testing of individuals at high risk for complications and/or severely ill requiring hospitalization; those exposed to a confirmed or probably case; have a history of travel; or work in a high risk occupation (e.g. healthcare worker). This new focus is to identify potentially severe cases and focal outbreaks in the community rather than individual cases.
