The Department of Land and Natural Resources will celebrate National Trails Day on Saturday with a grand opening of two new state forest hiking trails — Kamananui Valley Road and the Kulanaahane trail — in Moanalua Valley on O‘ahu.

“With the addition of these two new trails totaling four-and-a-half miles to our hiking trail inventory, we are pleased to be able to expand recreational access opportunities for future generations of the people of Hawai‘i to enjoy,” said Laura H. Thielen, DLNR chairwoman. “This brings the total inventory of program trails to over 100 miles on O‘ahu.”

The public is invited to join DLNR and the Na Ala Hele O‘ahu Trail Advisory Council at Moanalua Valley Park starting at 9 a.m., where hikers will depart for the trailheads and install signs. Volunteers are invited to join trails staff and advisory council members for trail improvement work until 3 p.m.

The valley will also be open to the public for hiking, hunting, cultural resource preservation and education. The back of the valley will also be managed for wildlife preservation.

“As summer begins, today we’re also installing new hazard warning signs as a reminder to the public to always be mindful of hiking safely while in nature,” Thielen said.

Na Ala Hele is responsible for maintaining an inventory of trails and accesses in Hawai‘i. Adding these two trails brings the number of managed forest trails on O‘ahu to 42.


Last May, the Board of Land and Natural Resources officially designated both the Kamananui Valley Road and the Kulanaahane trail as new “program trails” within the O‘ahu Na Ala Hele Trail and Access Program inventory.
