Report: Fired Angels exec under MLB investigation
Associated Press
NEW YORK — A former Los Angeles Angels executive is part of a Major League Baseball investigation into skimming of signing bonuses for Latin American prospects, SI.com reported.
Clay Daniel was fired this week as the Angels' director of international scouting. He told the Los Angeles Times the team did not tell him why he was dismissed.
SI.com reported Friday that Daniel was the subject of an MLB Department of Investigations look into irregularities involving young Latin players. He had been with the team for nine years.
Citing unidentified sources, SI.com said the Angels had become concerned about financial improprieties by scouts in Venezuela under Daniel.
The Angels confirmed Daniel was no longer with the organization, but declined further comment before Friday night's game at Detroit.
Washington Nationals general manager Jim Bowden resigned in spring training under the stigma of a federal investigation into the skimming of bonuses given to Latin prospects. Bowden has said he is innocent in the matter.
