57 Hawaii schools to participate in summer free-lunch program

Under a federal program, 57 public schools will be offering free meals to students over the summer, the state Department of Education said.
The Summer Food Service for Children reimburses the state for the meals.
Participating schools must have 50 percent or more of their students qualifying for free or reduced-priced lunches. They all offer summer programs, but students do not have to be participating to receive the free meals. Students should notify the school ahead of time of their arrival since the lunches are based on a first-come first-served basis and the school needs to account for how many lunches will be served.
“The kids just have to be 18 years old or younger,” said Sharon Egi, supervisor of the school food services branch.
Egi also said the students do not have to be enrolled at the school that is participating in the meals program, be a public school student, or already be participating in a free or reduced-price lunch program at their primary school.
