Tennis: Sharapova wraps up victory in 2 minutes in England

BIRMINGHAM, England — Maria Sharapova needed only two minutes to wrap up a rain-delayed 6-3, 6-4 victory today over American Alexa Glatch and reach the third round of the Aegon Classic.
The former top-ranked player advanced in the Wimbledon warm-up tournament after her match was delayed Wednesday by weather. Sharapova will face seventh-seeded Francesca Schiavone, who cruised past Mariya Koryttseva 6-1, 6-1.
Sharapova, who missed 10 months with a shoulder injury before returning at the French Open, had two match points against Glatch on Wednesday. But the rain turned into a downpour with Glatch holding an advantage at 4-5.
Sharapova's first shot Thursday was a solid forehand return of serve, followed by a winning approach shot, which brought the score back to deuce.
She reached match point with a quieter return of serve that Glatch struck beyond the baseline. The 19-year-old saved the third match point with a winning serve. Sharapova earned a fourth match point with a short low return combined with a winning pass.
Sharapova forced Glatch to come in again with a short return, and Glatch over-hit to end the match.
"It's never easy, but everyone has to deal with these situations," Sharapova said of the delay. "It's tricky, but I'm glad I could make it."
She is hoping her shoulder holds up throughout the tournament.
"We will see. I play the best I can and just get the job done," she said.
