Thomas Lum, 93, helped found newspaper union

Thomas "Tommy" Lum, a longtime employee of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and the Hawaii Newspaper Agency, died June 9 at his home in Hawai'i Kai. He was 93.
Lum was born on Jan. 28, 1916 in Honolulu. He served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946 and rose to the rank of master sergeant.
Lum joined the Star-Bulletin and HNA as an office boy. When he retired in 1985, he had worked his way up to advertising production supervisor.
In addition, Lum was a founding member of the Hawai'i Newspaper Guild, the union that represents nonmanagement employees at the Star-Bulletin and Honolulu Advertiser.
Lum is survived by his wife, Shirley; son, Anthony; daughter, Malia Marquez; brother, Raymond; and two granddaughters.
The family will hold a casual gathering at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Kilohana Methodist Church in Niu Valley. He will be buried at a later date at Hawaiian Memorial Park.
