Soccer: Iraq and New Zealand tie 0-0 at Confed Cup

JOHANNESBURG — Iraq and New Zealand played a 0-0 tie tonight at the Confederations Cup that eliminated both nations.
Iraq could have advanced with a multi-goal victory, but the Asian champions rarely threatened until the final minutes and had to work hard to fend off a spirited fight from the All Whites — who wore all black.
Spain (3-0) finished first in Group A with six points, two ahead of South Africa (1-1-1), which advanced despite losing to the Spaniards 2-0. Iraq (0-1-2) was third with two points, followed by New Zealand (0-2-1).
South African fans in attendance at half-filled Ellis Park rooted for New Zealand, since a tie or Kiwi win advanced the Bafana Bafana to the semifinals.
