Kailua Fireworks Show will go on, backers say

The community group working to make sure fireworks dazzle the skies over Kailua Beach once again this 4th of July say the show will go on.
The Save Kailua Fireworks community volunteers held a press conference this morning at Kailua Beach and said they are confident the group will raise the $40,000 needed to put on the fireworks display.
Committee member Gloria Garvey said that all necessary permits have been acquired. She said Rep. Cynthia Thielen was instrumental in assuring that the permits were obtained.
Except for one year where there were safety issues over wind and barges, the fireworks show off Kailua Beach has been held every year since 1948.
Plans call for an airshow at 6 p.m. and the fireworks starting shortly after dark.
There had been considerable concern this year that the event might be cancelled because of the economic downturn and a lack of funds.
The group is still accepting donations. For information see www.savekailuafireworks.com
