Former Big Island resident Kimberly Kim defeated Jessica Korda of Bradenton, Fla., on the first hole of a playoff yesterday to win the Rolex Girls Junior Championship at Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.

Kim, 17, putted from 65 feet to 2 feet and made par, while Korda three-putted for a bogey on the playoff hole after both finished at 2-over-par 218 in the American Junior Golf Association tournament.

It was Kim's fourth AJGA victory in her final junior event, according to the organization's Web site.

Kim took the lead with a birdie on the 17th hole, but fell back into a tie following a bogey at 18 to finish with a final-round 1-over 73. Korda shot a 69 in the final round.

Kaua'i's Kelli Oride shot a final-round 77 and tied for 54th at 235.

This past Monday, Kim, who now lives in Arizona, won the U.S. Women's Open sectional in Santa Cruz, Calif., to qualify for her third consecutive Open, July 9 to 23, at Bethlehem, Pa.

CHING, DYNAMO IN A TIE

Kamehameha Schools alum Brian Ching scored in the 89th minute to give host Houston a 1-1 tie against 10-man Real Salt Lake last night and extend the Dynamo's unbeaten streak to a team record-tying 11 games.

Ching charged through the box for a point-blank header from three yards after getting a pass from Brian Mullan on the right side.

Houston (8-2-4) saw its five-game winning streak snapped but is 8-0-3 since a 1-0 loss to D.C. United on April 4. The Dynamo took over sole possession of first place in the Western Conference.
