PORTUGUESE HERITAGE: The Hawai'i Council on Portuguese Heritage and Hawai'i Plantation Village offer a one-day workshop for Island youths and their families to explore their Portuguese heritage. Guest presenters include Herb Carlos, Margaret Rahr, and Frank De Lima, as well as Portuguese community figures.
Families can hear stories of ancestors' voyages to Hawai'i from mainland Portugal and the Portuguese islands of Madeira, the Azores and Cape Verde. Participants can learn the geography and history of their heritage through lectures, displays, videos and dance and participate in two Portuguese art projects. Hear Portuguese music from the braguinha — ancestor of the 'ukulele — and from Fado singers. Guided tours of the Hawai'i Plantation Village model homes will be available.
The workshop is free for registered participants and includes malassadas and Portuguese lunches prepared by Agnes Bake Shop in Kailua.
The day is designed for families with children 7 and older and is open to all ethnic backgrounds; children must be accompanied by their parents. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., July 18 at Hawai'i's Plantation Village in Waipahu. Early registration is advised at hcphhawaii@hawaiiantel.net or 845-1616.
