CBB: Texas' Workman tosses school's 21st no-hitter
Associated Press
AUSTIN, Texas — Brandon Workman threw the 21st no-hitter in University of Texas history, striking out 10 in the Longhorns' 9-0 win over Penn State on Sunday.
Workman (2-0) faced the minimum 27 batters and only three reached base — on two walks and an error — and survived a close call in the ninth inning.
Rick Marlin hit a pitch that bounced off Workman's leg, but shortstop David Hernandez grabbed the ball and made the throw to first in time to get the first out of the inning. The sophomore right-hander then struck out Sean Deegan and Bobby Jacobs to preserve the Longhorns' first no-hitter since Kenn Kasparek shut down Texas State last April.
"About the fifth or sixth (inning), you start thinking, 'I'm getting close,'" Workman said. "I knew that it was going on the whole time, but it didn't start to get significant until the fifth or sixth inning. I knew the entire time that nobody had gotten a hit, but early on, you don't think anything of it."
Workman, of Bowie, Texas, said he threw two no-hitters in high school, but they were both seven innings.
"Brandon Workman was brilliant today and he's been working toward that," Longhorns coach Augie Garrido said.
Brandon Belt, Tant Shepherd and Cameron Rupp each had two RBIs for Texas (9-0).
Calvin Grumley (0-1) allowed six runs on eight hits in 4 1-3 innings for Penn State (2-5).
