Host UH captures softball tourney

Clare Warwick had two hits and three RBIs and Alexandra Aguirre added three hits and two RBIs as Hawai'i beat Tokyo Women's College of Physical Education, 13-4, in six innings to capture the Bank of Hawai'i Invitational championship yesterday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Julie Franklin homered for UH, which finished 5-0 in the tournament. Kaoru Oyanagi hit a pair of two-run homers for Tokyo.
Earlier, the Rainbow Wahine routed Mount St. Mary's, 20-0, behind the one-hit pitching of Stephanie Ricketts and the slugging of Tanisha Milca and Dara Pagaduan.
Ricketts, named the tournament's most outstanding pitcher, struck out eight and walked one in the five-inning game. Milca had three hits, including a grand slam, and six RBIs and Pagaduan also had three hits, including a homer, and drove in four runs.
CHAMINADE SWEPT
Sammi Tiefenthaler and Natasha Dypchey each pitched two-hitters as Grand Canyon swept Chaminade, 8-0 and 7-0, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference doubleheader at Central O'ahu Regional Park.
Tiefenthaler struck out three and walked one and Dypchey struck out two and walked none for Grand Canyon (19-4, 4-2).
Shalin Yamaguchi had two hits for Chaminade (1-13, 0-4).
HILO LOSES, WINS
Christina Pedroza pitched a four-hitter with two strikeouts and no walks as host Hawai'i-Hilo beat Lock Haven (Pa.), 1-0, to salvage a split of a doubleheader at UHH Field.
Tessa Truong had two hits, including a two-out RBI double in the sixth, for the Vulcans (8-10). Amanda Gutmaker had two hits for the Lady Eagles (1-3).
In the opener, Kristen Erd pitched a four-hitter with nine strikeouts and no walks to lead Lock Haven to a 2-1 victory.
BASEBALL
HPU, HILO SPLIT
Toby Inouye pitched a six-hitter with two strikeouts and no walks as Hawai'i Pacific beat host Hawai'i-Hilo, 8-0, yesterday to salvage a split of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader at Wong Stadium.
What had been a pitching duel between Inouye and Clayton Uyechi dissolved into a nightmare for the Vulcans (6-7, 2-4) when the Sea Warriors (12-2, 4-2) scored seven runs in the fifth inning. Three runs scored on bases-loaded walks (there were five in the inning), one scored on a hit batter, another on a passed ball and two on Alex Agortsas' single.
Uyechi was lifted after four innings, having given up three hits and one run.
In the opener, Matt Haasenritter had four hits and Thomas Brown had two hits and three RBIs to lead Hilo to an 11-5 victory.
TENNIS
FREE LESSONS TODAY
Lessons for beginning juniors and pre-teen intermediates will be held today and next Monday at the Schofield courts. The first lesson is free for new students and the first 50 will receive a "Tennis Night in America" hat and "BNP Paribas Showdown" program.
"Tennis Night in America" will be held today at Madison Square Garden. It is part of an inaugural USTA youth registration initiative to get kids to register for spring and summer programs.
Lessons at Schofield will be held at 4 p.m., with beginners from age 9 through 18, and at 5 p.m., for beginners age 4 to 8.
Registration will be at the first class. Similar lessons started Saturday at Triple. For information, call 479-6727.
