College baseball: LSU hits 3 grand slams in 22-10 win

Associated Press

BATON ROUGE, La. — Leon Landry, Nicholas Pontiff and Micah Gibbs each had a grand slam for an NCAA record-tying mark to lead LSU to a 22-10 victory over Illinois on Saturday.

The Tigers' (10-1) three grand slams tied an NCAA single-game record that was achieved on eight occasions — most recently when Southeast Missouri State played Freed-Hardeman in 2007. But LSU become the first to approach the mark in the Southeastern Conference.

The Tigers also hit seven homers in a game for the first time since a Game 3 appearance of the NCAA Super Regional versus UC-Irvine June 9, 2008. Tyler Hanover had a three-run homer for LSU, while Sean Ochinko and Grant Dozar each added solo home runs.

Landry, who finished with a team-high five RBIs, hit a solo homer during a six-run third inning to give LSU an 11-4 lead.

Willie Argo hit three homers for the The Fighting Illini (6-2).
