Pearl City edges Campbell in OIA

Advertiser Staff Writer

PEARL CITY — In an early season baseball game featuring postseason-like drama, Pearl City held off Campbell, 5-4, yesterday in O'ahu Interscholastic Association action.

The two-time defending league champion Chargers improved to 3-0 in the OIA's Red Conference Western Division. Campbell fell to 2-1.

The game ended with Pearl City right fielder Bronson Oda making a diving catch of Nicholas Tiglao's line drive with the tying run on first base, but there were other crucial plays before that one.

Down 5-3 in the top of the sixth inning, the Sabers loaded the bases with two outs and No. 3 batter Michael Memea, at the plate. But on a 1-1 count, catcher Carlton Tanabe caught Chace Numata's pitch and quickly threw to third base to pick off the runner sliding back to the bag, ending the inning.

"We always tell Carlton to look for that, and (third baseman) Bryson (Namba) made the call," Chargers coach Gary Nakamoto said.

Campbell coach Rory Pico said it was a crucial mistake.

"You cannot ask for a better situation than that," Pico said. "But Tanabe likes to throw the ball, and we forgot who was behind the plate. We fell asleep."

Numata, a junior right-hander who surrendered an unearned run earlier in the inning, was appreciative of the play.

"When I heard Namba, I just threw a hard pitch to give Carlton a chance," said Numata.

The Sabers threatened again in the seventh.

Memea was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. He moved to second on Keanu Kapana's walk and later scored when a potential game-ending double-play throw to first went astray.

Tiglao then hit a veering liner to Oda, who dived to his left to make the sliding catch.

Campbell took a 1-0 lead in the first after Allyn Oliva-Respicio scored on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Chadwick Ka'alekahi, but Pearl City answered with two runs in the bottom half on Kyle Kobayashi's RBI single and Numata's bases-loaded walk.

The Chargers made it 3-1 in the third on Namba's run-scoring single, but the Sabers closed it to 3-2 in the fourth on Oliva-Respicio's RBI single.

Pearl City stretched the lead to 5-2 in th fifth, but Campbell cut it to 5-3 in the bottom half after a single and two errors.
