A fishing trip turned deadly yesterday when a wave knocked a 60-year-old man from a boat on Maunalua Bay and attempts to get him back into the vessel failed.
More than 45 minutes later, he was pulled from the water by fire department rescue crews, but by then he was in critical condition, said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Robert Main.
Main said the man was brought to shore, where rescue crews performed CPR until EMS personnel arrived and took him to Straub Clinic and Hospital.
Department of Emergency Services spokesman Bryan Cheplic said the man was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Main said a call for help came in at 8:20 a.m. and that units from the Hawai'i Kai fire station responded along with the Air One helicopter, rescue watercraft and Rescue Company One.
They found the man at 9:05 a.m. between buoys 1 and 2.
A police report said the man was on a fishing trip when the wave hit the boat and he fell into the bay. The report did not say how many other people were in the 25-foot boat, but that attempts to get the man back into the vessel were unsuccessful.
Water on the bay was choppy and murky as a rainstorm swept through O'ahu.
The medical examiner's office had not identified the man as of last night.
