NEW YORK — Los Angeles Angels shortstop Erick Aybar left Saturday's game against the New York Yankees after getting hit in the mouth by a deflected throw.

The slick-fielding Aybar was covering second base on Derek Jeter's first-inning steal attempt when catcher Mike Napoli's throw bounced and caromed off Jeter's helmet into the left side of Aybar's face.

Aybar stayed face down in the dirt for a few moments before walking off the field with the help of a trainer. He was taken to see Yankees team dentist Dr. Scott Levy.

"He'll be OK. He caught that ball right in his mouth and a couple of his teeth are jarred a little bit, a little bit loose. But he should be OK," manager Mike Scioscia said after the Angels' 8-4 victory.

X-rays were negative. Aybar received several sutures in his upper lip and might be available for the series finale Sunday.

"We'll see," Scioscia said.

Maicer Izturis replaced Aybar at shortstop for the Angels, who already have seven players — including six pitchers — on the disabled list.

Jeter, safe on the play, also was shaken up but remained in the game.

"It's no problem. I expect to play tomorrow," he said.
