The University of Hawaii baseball was penalized the equivalent of 0.27 scholarships, a penalty stemming from a below-par Academic Progress Rate and the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team was honored for high achievement, according to figures released today by the NCAA.
The Academic Progress Rate was implemented by the NCAA to encourage academic performance and help institutions examine admissions policies, retention and graduation rates, as well as improve academic support for athletes. Schools usually are sanctioned if they fall under a 925 score — which projects to a 60 percent graduation success rate in the NCAA's APR scoring system.
UH baseball got a score of 922 and will be limited to awarding 11.43 of the possible 11.7 athletic scholarships. UH men's basketball also got a 922 score but was not sanctioned.
All other UH sports attained a 925 or better.
UH women's volleyball had the highest score among UH sports with 996 and earned a recognition award from the NCAA. Indoor and outdoor track was next at 976. The highest-scoring men's sport was tennis was 982.
Last year, UH men's basketball lost two scholarships, football one and baseball 0.48.
Some of the other colleges penalized included (all men unless noted): Auburn basketball (1 scholarship), Colorado basketball (1), Indiana basketball (2), Louisiana Tech basketball (n/a), Mississippi football (3), New Mexico State football (4) and basketball (n/a), Ohio State basketball (2), Portland State football (3.3), Purdue basketball (1), San Jose State women's basketball (1), men's soccer (n/A) and football (n/a), Tennessee basketball (1) and University of the Pacific baseball (1.02).
