Doctor honored by Mental Health America of Hawaii

Dr. Tom Leland will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award from Mental Health America of Hawai'i at a luncheon May 14. Leland has spent five decades as a community psychiatrist helping people with severe mental illness.

The event will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i at 2454 S. Beretania St.

Dr. Naleen Andrade, psychiatry chairwoman at the John A. Burns School of Medicine, will be recognized for her work on Native Hawaiian mental health issues. Others who will be recognized include:

  • Donald Pilburn of the state Department of Health, for his work with young children.

  • The late Laura Meech, who will receive a posthumous award for her advocacy of the rights of others.

  • Maile Watters, who has provided a voice representing youth on mental health issues.

  • Gary Nishi of Greenthumb in Waimanalo, for hiring people with serious and persistent mental illness.
