Wai'anae has forfeited all of its O'ahu Interscholastic Association boys volleyball playoff victories — including Thursday night's win over Roosevelt which appeared to land the Seariders in tonight's championship final — after it was discovered they had been using a player who had not met academic standards.

Roosevelt has been declared OIA champion, and OIA boys volleyball coordinator Neal Takamori said Wai'anae has forfeited its state tournament berth. The rest of the league's state tournament berths will be determined after factoring in Wai'anae's forfeits.

Wai'anae athletic director Glenn Tokunaga told The Advertiser he received an e-mail from a teacher this morning alerting him about the player, who did not pass the latest grade check on April 20.

Thursday night's match against Roosevelt was televised live on OC16.

Tokunaga met with the player and verified that he should not have played in any matches after April 20.

Under Department of Education policy, student-athletes must maintain a 2.0 grade point average and cannot have a failing grade in any class at the time of designated grade checks.
