Three records were broken at the Interscholastic League of Honolulu track and field championships last night at Kamehameha.
Saint Louis senior Trevor Mau started the meet off setting records in the long and triple jumps.
Mau jumped 23 feet, 10 1/4 inches in the long jump yesterday, and recorded his triple-jump record of 47-1 1/2 during Wednesday's trials. Mau also set the long jump record (23-6 3/4) in the trials.
"My coach made me sprint more so I got more work on the runway," said Mau, who also anchored Saint Louis' winning 4x100-meter relay. "I put on more speed and it helped on my distance."
He improved more than a foot in the long jump and 3 to 4 feet in the triple jump over last year. He was the 2008 ILH triple jump champion.
"On Wednesday I was freaking excited and it was funny because the guy who had the record came up to me and said, 'Congrats. You broke my record.' And I was like, 'Oh, I'm sorry.'
"It feels good to have my name in the history books."
The Kamehameha girls 4x100-meter relay team of Kelli Aken-Pagdilao, Whitney Thomas, Shawna Kinilau and Hailey Kauhane won in 49.86 seconds, breaking the record set by Punahou of 49.9 hand-timed (50.14 adjusted time) in 1987.
"I think we always had it in us, but we kept refining our passes and it turned out well," said Kauhane, the anchor. "We were pleasantly surprised. We got everything together and I'm really proud of us. I hope we can do it next week too."
Punahou boys and girls won the team titles, with the boys scoring 150 points. Kamehameha came in second with 98 points and Saint Louis third with 91.
"The senior class in particular really stepped up," Punahou boys coach Micah Pavich said. "We got a bunch of young blood who came in and stepped up.
"We have depth. We're really lucky because the kids come out and they find their own unique talents."
Punahou senior Lucas Lam won his third straight 1,500-meter run title in 4:09.55.
Other Buffanblu champions were senior Joey Bryant in the high jump (6-6), junior Thomas Loui in the pole vault (13-3), sophomore KT Tuumalo in the 400-meter dash (50.42), and the Buffanblu won the 4x400-meter relay (3:31.19).
The Punahou girls won with 190.67 points, to 167 for Kamehameha and 55 for 'Iolani.
Punahou scored a point in every event, something coach Duncan Macdonald called "unusual."
"We had a big point in discus by Leilani Doktor (sixth place), which we haven't had in a while, and we had some very good big things," Macdonald said.
Punahou junior Ashley Satterwhite won the 100- and 200-meter dashes, in 12.53 and 26.00 seconds, respectively.
"We came from behind so I'm really proud of the team," said Satterwhite, who set a personal record in the 100. "We have some of the best athletes in every event, and the coaches pull the best out of us in everything we do."
In the 200, she matched her previous best and said it is her goal to run under 26 seconds. She won the ILH title in the 200 as a freshman.
"I crossed the line first and that's all that matters to me now," said Satterwhite, who missed the ILH championships last season recovering from a stress fracture in her left foot.
Punahou senior Joy Piotrowski also won two events, repeating as champion in the long jump (16-11 1/4) and triple jump (37-1 1/2).
The Buffanblu also won the 4x400-meter relay (4:05.65), senior Mari Carmichael repeated as the 800-meter dash champion in 2:25.57, junior Regan Balmoja won the pole vault (10-00), freshman Kyleigh Mann won the 1,500 (5:02.27) and sophomore Julia Brand won the 300-meter hurdles (47.77).
