'Iolani senior Brittney Guro pitched a five-hitter and the Raiders had 11 hits to blank Kapolei, 7-0, last night in DataHouse/HHSAA Softball Division I State Championships quarterfinal action.
No. 1 seed and Interscholastic League of Honolulu champ 'Iolani (14-1) will face O'ahu Interscholastic Association runner-up Mililani (14-3) in tonight's 7 p.m. semifinal at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Guro, who had 110 strikeouts in 94 innings during ILH play, struck out only two Hurricanes last night but walked only one and was backed by errorless defense.
"She kept them off-balance, her riser was working well and she was mixing it in and out," said Raiders coach Lance Watanabe. "And our defense played well, as usual."
'Iolani took a 1-0 lead after Jana Tokuhama led off the game with a double to center field, advanced to third on Lahela Usui's sacrifice bunt and scored on Kim Souza's sac fly to left.
The Raiders made it 4-0 in the third after a dropped fly ball in left field brought home two runners and Amanda McCaskill's bases-loaded walk scored another. 'Iolani added a run in the fourth after Marisa Terayama led off with a double and scored on Usui's double.
The Raiders made it 7-0 in the seventh on Kelli Ann Lum's two-run single.
Guro said her plan against Kapolei's lineup — which includes two NCAA Division I recruits — was to not let the Hurricanes (13-5) get the pitch they wanted.
"I tried to get ahead in the count and keep the ball away from their sweet spot," Guro said. "It's always easier pitching with a lead, and our defense played really well."
