DETROIT — Florida jockey Ricardo Alfredo Valdes has pleaded not guilty to race-fixing charges in U.S. District Court in Detroit.

Valdes was arraigned on Friday on one count each of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to influence sporting contests by bribery.
The Ocala, Fla., man is also charged with counts related to violations of interstate commerce.
Federal officials say Valdes and two Michigan men fixed thoroughbred races in Florida, Delaware and Michigan. The Detroit-area men also face charges in an alleged point-shaving scheme at the University of Toledo.
Defense attorney Pat Moeves (moo-AY’-ves) says his firm is looking to reach an agreement with prosecutors.
