Asian influence subject of May 23 forum

The impact of Asian communities on the struggle for self-determination among Hawaiians will be discussed at a public forum May 23 at the Japanese Cultural Center.

The forum will be from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the center, 2454 S. Beretania St. in Moiliili.
The forum will focus on a new book, �Asian Settler Colonialism: From Local Governance to the Habits of Everyday Life in Hawaii.� It examines the influence of Japanese, Korean and Filipino settlements in Hawaii, Asian practices among state lawmakers, the prison system, the military, literature and the visual arts.
Speakers include the book�s editors, Candace Fujikane and Jonathan Y. Okamura, as well as Haunani-Kay Trask, Momiala Kamahele, Healani Sonoda, Eiko Kosasa, Ida Yoshinaga and Kyle Kajihiro.
